Couple Found Camping in Rochester Hills Back Yard Questioned in Break-In Nearby

The incidents happened near Hamlin and John R on Sunday morning in Rochester Hills.

A Rochester Hills family was asleep when someone smashed a window, entered their home and stole cash and jewelry early Sunday morning, according to police.

And though a man and woman were taken in for questioning after they were found camping in a back yard nearby, police weren't able to connect them to the break-in.

The break-in was reported to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office at 3:26 a.m. Sunday. It happened in the 2100 block of Wentworth Street, west of John R and south of Hamlin Road, near the Hampton Golf Course, elementary school and apartment complex.

According to a sheriff's office report, the homeowners reported someone had shattered their back sliding door, entered the home and took the items. The suspects then fled on foot, the report stated.

A K-9 unit from the sheriff's office tracked the suspects for about a half-mile before losing the scent near Hampton Circle and Worthham, south of the home.

Meanwhile, in a neighborhood about a half-mile north of the break-in, a resident in the 500 block of Lexington reported two suspicious people hanging out on a patio. Deputies arrived on the scene, searched the area and found a man and woman walking through the back yards of the neighborhood; "the male was sweating profusely," the report stated.

Deputies discovered the man and woman, both from Rochester Hills, who said they were camping in a neighbors' yard and were out for a walk when they were found. "Personal effects and camping gear were located a short distance away," the report stated. "There were no items from the home invasion found on the subjects or surrounding area."

The man and woman both had misdemeanor warrants from Oakland County and other jurisdictions, so they were lodged in the Oakland County Jail on those warrants.

The incidents remain under investigation; call 1-888-887-6146 with information.
