Community Invited to Make Snowflakes To Show Support for Sandy Hook
You can drop off your creations at the school Administration Building starting today through Jan. 9.

The Rochester Community Schools PTA Council is encouraging the community to create paper snowflakes to send to Sandy Hook Elementary School students in the wake of the tragedy at their school.
The snowflakes will be collected at the Administration Building and sent to Newtown, Connecticut.
"We have received phone calls, emails, and texts from many of you asking how we may be able to support the students and families directly impacted by the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary," wrote PTA Council President Michelle Bueltel in an email to parents.
"The National PTA, working in conjunction with the Newton PTA, has asked that families who wish to be of assistance participate in the snowflake project."
The snowflakes will be used to decorate the school that Sandy Hook students return to in January.
Snowflakes can be dropped off at the administration building today and through Jan. 9.

I understand how people felt so horrified & moved by the shooting at Sandy Hook that they felt they must do something. That said, it's a tragedy when anyone gets killed, especially a child. My understanding is that Sandy Hook has asked people to back off a bit from the giving -- they feel overwhelmed -- & we have plenty of child murders here in MI, including at or near schools. Just because those murders don't make the national news or don't occur all at once in a single day doesn't mean those tragedies aren't real & soul-searing. Also, there are children in MI grieving the loss via murder of their close relatives. There surely are more local places to which our thoughts of concern, solidarity, etc. might go, yes?
I hate to make this comparison, but I fear it's apt -- during the "troubles" in Northern Ireland, people set up camps for children who had been traumatized by violence to escape to, where they could feel safe for at least some period of time. Perhaps once the snowflake drive is done, we could join with other school districts to create such a camp for MI children, because I suspect there are as many here traumatized by "normal" violence as there were in a war zone.
