Comcast, WOW, AT&T: What's the Best Cable Service in Rochester?

A Patch reader asked for recommendations for cable companies around town; here's what you had to say.

A reader wrote to Rochester Patch this week about changing cable companies and wondered which services the Rochester community recommends.

We posted the question on our Facebook page and received dozens of responses. Most readers praised WOW and AT&T Uverse; Comcast, Dish Network and DirecTV were also mentioned.

And one reader had this to say: "People watch too much TV."

Here's a roundup of reviews on the companies; which one is your favorite?

WOW

  • They are honest with pricing and haven't unexpectedly raised rates, said Stacey Rieck.
  • Vicki Coapman LeBay switched from Comcast to WOW six months ago and will never go back, she said.
  • Their ads are cute, and they have great customer service, other readers said.

Comcast

  • Forever raises rates, said Jerry Jenkins.
  • Best for speed and consistency of delivery, said David Bitterman.
  • Have had it forever and had no issues whatsoever, said Diane Bond.

AT&T Uverse

  • They have the best DVR, and customer service is great, said Louann Schachermeyer.
  • Offers a wireless DVD box that can be watched anywhere — even a TV outside, said Kevin Benvenuti.

DirectTV

  • Donna McMullen has had this satellite service for five years and said she has always been pleased with the service.
  • It's reliable and cheaper than Charter and Uverse, said Michele Arquette.

Dish Network

  • We've had it forever and love it, said Christina Davis.

In the midst of all of the cable company reviews, Patch reader Suzanne Shields had this advice: "Ditch the cable and get a converter box and Netflix."

Comcast gave us a 2 year "deal." After the first year it went up $40.00 a month more than they said it would. I called and they said "equipment charges are exempt from increases."
We quit and now they are refusing to refund us the $85.00 they owe us!!

I think from a cost point of view they all shake out to be almost equally expensive (all their incentive deals expire after 6 months anyway) From a technical point of view and based on where I live my vote goes for ATT Uverse..The cable system is very old here with lots of line losses because of inferior connections and dispatch boxes.. ATT uses fibre optics up to our subdivision. My HDTV reception is way better with Uverse once comparing it with my neighbors cable (WOW and Comcast) Forget Direct TV , too many wash out issues during rain and snow showers...

Where do you live? I am trying to get AT&T but need to find someone in my neighborhood who has it so they know that I can be hooked up.

We are bundled with Comcast, phone, hi speed internet, (wireless) and cable-again, the rates continually go up and it's difficult to reach a "live person" locally as calls are taken all over and rarely in Michigan due to their hours. Comcast shuffles the channels a couple of times a year so you end up paying a lot more for "packages" just to get a couple of standard channels -you can't pick and choose. I would like something reliable, and certainly with advanced technology and more customers, something more cost effective. Does anyone have more info or experience with pricing and service on ATT? We live in Rochester, a few blocks from town. Thank you
