Winning Ducks Scooped From Pond After Weather Cancels Ducky Race

Funds raised will buy two wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

The nonstop rain and whipping winds Sunday gave 3,200 ducks in Rochester a reason to quack a sigh of relief.

The multic0lored rubber ducks will have a year to rest up — or get in shape — to see which one is the fastest in the city.

The weather forced the cancellation of the fifth annual Rochester Rubber Ducky Race, an event that benefits Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan with an old-fashioned festival and duck race down Paint Creek in Rochester Municipal Park.

But there were prizes to be awarded, so on Sunday, organizer Donetta Behen dressed in her most rainproof clothing and dropped the ducks into a pond near her Rochester Hills neighborhood; she picked out the winners at random.

Here are the winning ducks, in the order they were plucked from the pond. Everyone who adopted a duck in the weeks leading up to Sunday's event received an adoption certificate with a number on it; check your certificate to see if you are a winner.

The first-place duck receives a bike; other prizes include gift cards and gift baskets, all donated by area merchants.

Behen said Sunday that the event raised enough money from duck adoption fees to grant two wishes through Make-A-Wish.

"It really will bring a smile to a child's face when they learn they have a wish," Behen said.

I missed 3rd place by one number! I think it's fabulous that you raised so much money for the Make a Wish Foundation! Too bad about the race cancellation. I heard on the radio that one lady thought it was strange that she was shopping for flowers in her winter parka!
