Boy, 16, Taken to Hospital After Smoking Unknown Substance
The Rochester Hills teen may have smoked K2/Spice, police say. It was one of two incidents related to the drug this weekend.
The 16-year-old Rochester Hills boy who was reportedly hospitalized in serious condition after smoking K2/Spice on Friday afternoon was actually treated at Troy Beaumont Hospital and released — and it's not clear what drug had caused him to be uncooperative and incoherent, police say.
Detective Ray White of the Rochester Hills substation of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said sheriff's deputies responded to the boy's home on Simpson Street around 4:40 p.m. Friday and found the boy lying "uncooperative and speaking incoherently" on his lawn.
The Rochester Hills Fire Department also responded to the scene; the boy was placed on a backboard and transported to the hospital.
"The juvenile later told a family member that he had met some people on Auburn Road near Adams Road in Auburn Hills," White stated. "He smoked something that they had out of a glass bowl. He said that it was marijuana mixed with Spice.
"Another family member told deputies that the juvenile had smoked mushrooms. It is unknown what the juvenile ingested, but it caused him to be taken to the hospital."
K2, also known as Spice, is a dried herbal blend sprayed with an analgesic chemical, which creates a high similar to marijuana, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Administration. It is sold as incense. Side effects include heart palpitations, respiratory issues, panic attacks, hallucinations, delusions, vomiting and increased agitation.
In a separate weekend incident, a 27-year-old Rochester man was arrested Sunday night for allegedly stealing K2/Spice from the Shell gas station at Rochester and Avon roads, White stated.
Deputies were called to the gas station at 8:35 p.m. Sunday; an attendant told them a man had taken the item without paying for it and, when confronted outside the station by the attendant, the two fought and the man ran away.
Deputies found him in the parking lot of a nearby church; he dropped the K2/Spice item to the ground while deputies were arresting him, White stated.
The man was being held at the Oakland County Jail.
