Bites Nearby: Get Corned Beef at Main Street Deli

For 15 years, this deli has been a destination for Rochester diners.

Main Street Deli, 709 Main St., Rochester, 248-656-5066

We were in the mood for sandwiches when we stopped for weekday lunch at the deli, which is located just north of downtown near the Rochester Athletic Club.

But what we quickly learned was that the restaurant is mostly known for its fresh-not-frozen meats — especially corned beef.

They'll be serving it up today, St. Patrick's Day, and they'll also be serving their regular menu of more than 95 sandwiches, salads and soups.

We tried the Triple Decker Grilled Cheese on Rye (with cheddar, provolone and swiss), the Cajun Turkey Melt (turkey, cheddar, onion and peppers with ranch and cajun sauce) and the sandwich special, which that day was Egg Salad.

Everything was served toasted and fresh, and the crispy new dill pickles were a fun accompaniment (in fact, we watched as the pickle delivery man brought in a new shipment).

Main Street Deli has been open for 15 years. You order at the table; the dining room is filled with spacious booths and the wait staff is attentive.

Recommended dishes: The deli is known for its salads, especially the ones with chicken on top (the chicken is fresh and marinated).

Prices: Sandwiches and wraps, $5-$7; salads, $5-$9.

Hours: 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.
