A steady stream of people toting family heirlooms and other valuables visited the 18th Antique Appraisal Day at the Rochester Community House on Sunday, hoping to learn more about their treasures.

Several area professional appraisers, including Paul Haig of Haig's of Rochester, volunteered their time from noon-4 p.m. to appraise items at the bargain price of just $5 each.

The Rochester-Avon and Oakland Township historical societies together host the antique appraisal day twice a year, providing an inexpensive way for residents to have their valuables and family heirlooms appraised by professionals while also raising money for the historical societies.

The event usually raises between $1,000-$2,000, said Colleen Barkham, a volunteer for and secretary of the Oakland Township Parks and Recreation Commission.

What's your favorite antique? Tell us in the comments.

It was my pleasure, Colleen. What a great event! It was very interesting to see what people were bringing in, and the stories behind some of the items were fascinating! Thank you for inviting Patch to cover it.

As one of the appraisers, I had fun looking at all the goodies. The customers were great, as was the hosting group, Rochester-Avon Historical Society. Hope I get invited back next year. Sue Kane, Kane's Town Hall Antiques, Romeo, Michigan

Sue, you cracked me up talking about that "bathing beauty" nodder! I could tell you were having fun there. It was a pleasure to meet you, and thanks for the interview!
