The Rochester Area Jaycees are making the streets safer for both children and drivers this summer.

Safety Town, a program that teaches young children the basics of street safety before entering the halls of elementary school, is in session. The nationally recognized Safety Town Program sponsored by the Rochester Area Jaycees is specifically designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6 by the National Safety Town Corporation. Students learn a variety of safety skills including home, neighborhood, stranger, fire, bike, and pedestrian safety. Fun and educational activities are planned and administered by teachers and teen volunteers including arts and crafts, poems, songs and special presentations by the Oakland Township Fire Department, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, and DTE Energy.

In Safety Town, a miniature town located in the gym of Delta Kelly Elementary School, the students learn the basics of stoplights and crosswalks through first-hand experience, navigating the streets of Safety Town in child-sized cars while other students act as pedestrians.

The class is two weeks in length, Monday - Thursday. The final course of the year will be offered July 23 – Aug. 2. Choose between morning or afternoon classes from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. The cost is $70 per student. On the last day of class parents are invited to attend the Safety Town graduation ceremony, at which each child will receive a certificate and Safety Town T-shirt.
