Parents and students of McGregor Elementary School took to the streets of downtown Rochester the weekend of June 8-10 to take part in the school’s first-ever “McGregor Loves Main Street” promotion sponsored by the McGregor PTA.
McGregor families were asked to eat, shop and play downtown Friday, Saturday and Sunday in order to help support local businesses and merchants, especially during the current phase of construction along Main Street. To gain momentum for the event the McGregor PTA partnered with the Downtown Development Authority who helped spread the word about the school’s promotion to businesses throughout downtown.
Select merchants offered discounts and special incentives to McGregor shoppers wearing their spirit wear that weekend. The McGregor PTA, in turn, promised an ice cream party for the classroom whose students turned in the most receipts from their downtown excursions. “We were very excited for this opportunity to reach out to and help make a difference in our community,” said McGregor PTA President Kevin Beers. “It was so much fun to see a bunch of McGregor shirts around Rochester that weekend.”
All together, McGregor families invested over $2,000 shopping and eating downtown during the weekend. Mrs. Hutt’s second grade class won the ice cream party with a whopping 21 receipts!
As an added treat, Rochester Mayor Stuart Bickson helped serve the ice cream to the excited and happy students. The McGregor PTA is already planning a second “McGregor Loves Main Street” promotion when school returns in the fall.
