Oakland Youth Orchestra’s Fall Concert Season Begins Tonight
Oakland Youth Orchestra’s 2012-2013 Fall Concert Season Begins November 1 at the Oxford Fine Arts Center
Oakland Youth Orchestras’ first concert of the fall season will take place at 6:30 pm at the Oxford Fine Arts Center.
Celebrating its 38th season, Oakland Youth Orchestras will showcase an expanded roster of over 325 students from three counties, 37 communities, 25 school districts, and 16 private schools in Southeast Michigan.
Rochester and Rochester Hills are represented with 34 students from a dozen Rochester Community schools.
The students will be performing selections by Holst, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens, Dukas, and more.
OYO will also feature a solo performance by Joseph McDonnell, the 2012 Philharmonia Orchestra Solo Competition winner. McDonnell, a senior at Holly High School, will be performing the Tuba Concerto in F minor, Romanza, Andante Sostenuto by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The conductors, Zeljko Milicevic, Wendy Stuart, John Kennedy and Nicholas Karpinsky — all public school orchestra teachers— are accomplished musicians with extensive performance and music education backgrounds.
Due to OYO’s emergent student population, this season’s venue has moved from the Lake Orion Performing Arts Auditorium to the Oxford Fine Arts Center, located at Oxford High School, 745 N. Oxford Road, Oxford, MI 48371.
Tickets will be available at the door: Adults—$10, children and students—$5, and ticket quartets—$30 (includes four tickets).
About Oakland Youth Orchestras
OYO has been educating and enriching youth through music since 1975. OYO is a four-tiered orchestra program serving an increasing population of over 325 students in grades two through twelve from throughout southeast Michigan. These students desire to be challenged beyond their school musical experience, and OYO fosters enrichment through opportunities in music theory, chamber music, community outreach performance and competitions. The four levels include Studio String, String, Philharmonia and Symphony orchestras. Oakland Youth Orchestra holds three concerts per season—in November, February and May. All concerts will be held at Oxford Fine Arts Center. OYO is supported in part with grants from the Michigan Council of the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
