ROCHESTER, MI (September 14, 2011) – The work of Joseph Karl Publishing and Harvey House Publishing, from the Archdiocese of Detroit, was recognized by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Hotel during its 2011 press and book awards gala.  The awards honor newspapers, magazines, books, and publishers for their contributions to the Catholic press in 2010.

Joseph Karl Publishing author, publisher, and Catholic Press Association member Michele Bondi Bottesi was awarded First Place for Individual Excellence Writer/Editor and Second Place for Individual Excellence Photographer/Artist in the Individual Freelance Member Categories. The award-winning photographs were taken at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

One Man’s Journey to Freedom:  Escape From Behind the Iron Curtain (Gene X. Kortsha; Joseph Karl Publishing, 2010) was awarded Second Place in the Best Book By A Small Publisher category, bringing the extraordinary historical memoir’s total number of 2011 awards to five.  Kortsha’s portrayal was described as “in a league by itself."

Recognizing it as a "story of the human spirit," Olivia’s Gift (Nancy Carabio Belanger; Harvey House Publishing, 2010) was awarded Third Place in the category of Best Book By A Small Publisher. The pre-teen fiction book is the sequel to Olivia and the Little Way, which won a Catholic Press Award in 2009 and is widely used in Catholic school curricula.

With beautiful illustrations by Sandra Casali LewAllen, Olivia's Gift celebrates the value of life and the true gift of the Catholic faith. "Children need to know what is virtuous, how powerful it is to live as a real Catholic," said publishing colleague and Marian Catechist Susan Schoenstein.

Author, speaker, and Joseph Karl Publishing creative director Paul A. Ray was part of the Michigan team that traveled to Pittsburgh for the Convention and Centennial Celebration.  "Led by the Comforter with a strong, deep desire to see all people come to the knowledge of the truth, coupled with an intimate relationship with our Creator, Jesus Christ, Joseph Karl Publishing and Harvey House Publishing are honored to work together with the Catholic Press Association to draw souls to true and lasting happiness,” said Ray.  Where two or more are gathered together there I will be in their midst.  ~Matthew 18:20

Since being founded in 2009 to encourage, inspire, continue Catholic faith formation, and lead souls to Christ, Joseph Karl Publishing has been honored with 24 national and international awards for its life-changing work. Harvey House Publishing's mission is to fill the bookshelves of pre-teens with books that celebrate our Catholic faith, modesty, the gift of life, and a wholesome childhood.

The two Catholic publishing companies continue to advance their work by publishing and producing exceptional material that serves as a beacon of hope in the lives of those whom our Lord leads His way.
